The School Play

On Friday evening, our school performs a play called “The River Bridge.”
Backstage is busy — Ms. Rose, the stage manager, checks the props: a lantern, a rope, and a long blue cloth for the river. Ben fixes his cap, and Emma quietly reads her lines. Everyone must whisper backstage.

At seven o’clock, the lights dim and the curtain opens. The spotlight shines on the main actor, and the first scene begins. Later, a paper moon rises, and a small cardboard boat “sails” across the stage. When the play ends, the audience claps loudly.
